Over 4 million (40 lakh) people in Chhattisgarh have been pulled out of poverty between 2015-16 and 2019-21 as per NITI Aayog’s Report ‘National Multidimensional Poverty Index: A Progress Review 2023’.
“It is not us but the report of NITI Aayog that says this (reduction in poverty),” Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel said in a tweet. The latest report of the Aayog underlined that 40 lakh people have come out of poverty, Baghel said.
This change has come in Chhattisgarh only in the last 5 years, the Chief Minister said, signaling that the feat was achieved during the rule of Congress led government in Chhattisgarh that came to power in 2018. “This is a mirror for those who kept Chhattisgarh as a poor state for a decade and a half,” Baghel said with an overt reference to the 15 years of BJP rule in the state.
The Chief Minister said there was still a long way to go.
According to the report, 13.53 per cent people in Chhattisgarh have come out of the multinational poverty index (MPI) during the period. In 2015-16, 29.90 per cent people of the state’s total population were living below the poverty line. The figure has come down to 19.37 in 2019-21, the report said.
The rural areas, where the Bhupesh Baghel government has focused to strengthen the economy by launching Godhan and Rajiv Gandhi Nyay Yojana, saw the fastest decline in poverty. While 16.07 per cent people came out from poverty in rural areas, the urban registered just 5.58 per cent.
