Three people died of asphyxiation after a devastating fire broke out in a multi-storeyed commercial complex in the industrial city of Korba in Chhattisgarh on Monday afternoon.
Many people were injured as they jumped from different floors after fire engulfed the building. The preliminary reports suggested that fire broke out at Saheb cloth shop on the first floor of a complex located at transport nagar in the heart of Korba city.
Neither the shop nor the complex owners had made any specific fire-fighting arrangement that resulted in the incident taking a disastrous proportion.
Within minutes, the fire spread and gutted most of the shops on the first floor that housed maximum clothing establishments. The dense smoke and heat trapped people on the second floor. Finding no way out, many jumped from the building to save lives and got themselves injured.
Soon after receiving the information, fire tenders along with senior civil and police administration officials rushed to spot and started the rescue operation besides dousing the fire. After hectic exercise, the fire could be brought under control while those trapped inside could be evacuated.
Three people were unfortunately not lucky as they reportedly died due to suffocation. Of them, one was a woman and two were men. Sources said the woman was identified as Rashmi Singh, a native of Chirmiri, who had come for shopping.
The police have registered an offence and are investigating the matter.
