China has named bridges and villages along the highway connecting Xinjiang and Tibet provinces after its four military personnel who were killed in the Galwan Valley clash with Indian soldiers in June 2020.
According to foreign affairs expert, the Galwan clash in which China reported suffered major casualties continues to hunt India’s neighbour. While China had officially claimed that it lost only four soldiers, reports said the figure was much more.
The seriousness of the issue could be gauged by the fact that Chinese military officials reached out to the family members of the slain soldiers after eight months of the incident and later felicitated them after India honoured its martyrs with gallantry awards.
In an attempt to keep its house in order in the aftermath of 2020 Galwan valley clash with the Indian soldiers, China deputed Qi Fabao, regiment commander injured in the conflict, as torchbearer of Beijing Winter Olympic. Interestingly, the naming of the places in memory of the soldiers comes days after Qi Fabao attended the ruling Communist Party of China’s (CPC) Congress as a delegate.
Their names now appear on the road signs along the G219 highway, which runs from the Tibet Autonomous Region to the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, state-run Global Times reported. Along the G219 highway, 11 bridges are now named after them besides their hometowns, it added.
India has been consistently maintaining that peace and tranquillity along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) are important for the overall development of bilateral ties. The Indian and Chinese militaries have held 16 rounds of Corps Commander-level talks to resolve the prolonged border standoff.
