China is taking a dig at the Yoga practice that has been gaining ground across the globe for good health and spirit especially amidst COVID outbreak.

Terming Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the man who gave the ancient practice a global recognition, as “yoga enthusiast”, China’s government newspaper said India eased lockdown restrictions on Monday that marked the 7th International Yoga Day. Subsequently, the COVID cases in India increased on Monday, the report said, adding that India had seen a decline in the positive cases that surged after the Yoga Day was celebrated.

Underlining that Modi during a virtual appearance on Monday described Yoga as a “ray of hope” and a “source of strength” for the COVID-19 fight, the report highlighted the figures of infection and deaths in the country to  contest the claim.

“Under the cheerful atmosphere of Yoga Day, Karnataka state in southwest India announced relaxations from Monday in 16 districts that have recorded fewer cases, including Bangalore,” the Chinese newspaper said, adding that the Delhi government on Sunday announced it would reopen bars, public parks, gardens and golf clubs from Monday. Restaurants can serve alcohol from Monday and outdoor yoga activities will be allowed.

An expert whom the newspaper quoted however contended stating that the economy rather than yoga was the primary factor behind India’s decision to ease its lockdown. In fact, China is also baffled with the opening of the economy with the easing of lockdown restrictions.

The report cited an Indian expert and said that easing the lockdown before the epidemic that had been under control might lead to a third wave of coronavirus infections, which was likely to hit India by October.
