In a tragic incident, roof of a primary school collapsed at Jhalawar in Rajasthan on Friday morning, killing seven people and leaving 29 others injured.
The incident took place when children at the Piplod Government School in Manoharthana block of the district were assembling for morning prayers when the incident took place. Police said the children were pulled out of the debris with the help of teachers and villagers.
There were around 35 students in the building when the incident occurred, officials said. All the children were in the age group between eight and 11 years.
According to eyewitnesses and local villagers, the roof suddenly caved in due to persistent heavy rainfall over the past few days. The sound of the collapse was followed by screams and confusion as dust and debris engulfed the area.
The local residents rushed to rescue the trapped students, teachers and staff members. At least four JCB machines were pressed into the service to clear the debris.
The parents had to carry their children to the nearest hospitals. The visuals on the social media showed alleged lack of arrangement at the hospitals.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the loss of lives in the incident. In a post on X, he said, “The mishap at a school in Jhalawar, Rajasthan, is tragic and deeply saddening. My thoughts are with the affected students and their families in this difficult hour”. “Praying for the speedy recovery of the injured. Authorities are providing all possible assistance to those affected,” he added.
Condoling the loss of lives, Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma said, “The officials concerned have been directed to ensure proper treatment of the injured children.”
