Coal India Limited Organizes Kantha Fair to Empower Women Artisans in West Bengal

In a significant move towards women’s empowerment and socio-economic development, Coal India Limited (CIL), under the Ministry of Coal, organized a Kantha Fair at its Atrium, Coal Bhawan, New Town. The event highlighted the intricate embroidery work of 200-250 women artisans from West Bengal, who are beneficiaries of the Kantha Skill Centre, a CSR initiative by CIL.

CIL and its subsidiaries celebrated this milestone by recognizing the achievements of women in their offices and operational areas. Central Coalfields Ltd (CCL), Ranchi, led the initiative by hosting a mega exhibition of tribal art, women-led businesses, and technical skills, while subsidiaries such as BCCL, CMPDIL, ECL, NCL, SECL, MCL, and WCL also organized events promoting women empowerment.

Commitment to Women’s Upliftment

Smt. Rupinder Brar, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Coal, while addressing virtually, emphasized CIL’s commitment to fostering sustainable livelihoods through CSR initiatives. She stated, “CIL and its subsidiaries are dedicated to implementing impactful programs that empower women through skill development, entrepreneurship, and social initiatives, positively transforming communities across the nation.”

Dr. Vinay Ranjan, Director (P&IR), CIL, also reiterated the company’s mission, saying, “We are proud to promote self-reliance among women. CIL and its subsidiaries will continue uplifting marginalized communities and fostering economic opportunities while preserving India’s rich artistic heritage.”

Grand Inauguration & Recognition

The Kantha Fair was inaugurated by Dr. Vinay Ranjan, Director (P&IR), Shri Mukesh Agrawal, Director (Finance), and Shri Brajesh Kumar Tripathy, Chief Vigilance Officer, in the presence of women artisans. Three artisans were specially felicitated for their exceptional contributions to Kantha embroidery.

Senior officials, including Shri OP Mishra, Executive Director (CD), and Smt. Renu Chaturvedi, GM (CSR), also graced the occasion, reinforcing CIL’s dedication to women-led economic initiatives.

With initiatives like the Kantha Skill Centre, CIL aims to enhance livelihood opportunities and preserve India’s cultural heritage while empowering women artisans to become financially independent. These efforts underscore CIL’s role in driving inclusive growth and fostering a self-reliant India.
