Coal India outputs up by 13% in August, SECL in top spot

State-run Coal India Limited (CIL) has reported over 13 per cent increase in the production last month.

The Chhattisgarh-based South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL) remained in the top spot among all CIL entities in terms of percentage growth. Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (CIL), the Odisha-arm of the company, was the highest producer in terms of volume.

The coal miner produced 52.3 million tonnes (MT) of coal in the month of August 2023, which is 13.2 per cent higher than the output achieved during the corresponding period the last financial year. In August 2022, CIL produced 46.2 MT of coal.

The cumulative production of the company during the period April to August 2023 was pegged at 281.5 MT, which is 11.1 per cent higher than previous year’s 253.3 MT.

CIL’s offtake also increased by 15.3 per cent to 59 MT in August 2023. During the same period last year, CIL offtake was 51.2 MT. The cumulative offtake in the first five months of the fiscal also surged 7.9 per cent to 305.5 MT. In the last financial year, the offtake was 283.1 per cent during the same period.

SECL’s production increased by 24.9 per cent in August, the highest among all the entities of the CIL. The company produced 11.8 MT of coal last month while the output was reported to be 9.5 MT during the same period of the previous year. Even SECL topped the list in cumulative production, registering a growth of 22.8 per cent in the first five months of the current fiscal. The company produced 66.6 MT compared to previous year’s 54.3 MT.

Though the output of MCL increased nominally by 4.4 per cent in August, it remained the highest producer in terms of volume. The company produced 14.6 MT of coal compared to previous year’s 14 MT. The cumulative production registered a nominal growth of 0.9 per cent at 74. 6 MT.
