State-run Coal India Limited (CIL) had registered a growth of 23 per cent in the offtake or sales in the month of June even as first quarter (Q1) reported 32.7 per cent growth compared to corresponding period of last year (CPLY).
The coal miner sold 51.3 million tonne (MT) in the month of June 2021 compared to previous year’s 41.7 MT. The sales figure for the Q1 had also been encouraging for the company. As against previous years 120.8 MT, CIL coal offtake in April-June 2021 was 160.3 MT, registering a growth of 32.7 per cent.
The offtake had however come down compared to the month of May. It had risen by 38 per cent to 55 MT in May on the back of revival of fuel demand from the power sector.
The coal production went up marginally by 2 per cent in June from 40 MT to previous year’s 39.2 MT. The output during the Q1 that was marred by the second wave of COVID-19 induced pandemic was 124.0 MT against previous year’s 121.0 MT.
South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL), the largest coal producing entity of the CIL with over 150 MT output, had produced 9.2 MT of coal in the month of June compared to previous year’s 8.9 MT, reflecting a growth of 2.7 per cent.
The Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) and the Central Coalfields Limited (CCL) recorded a growth of 13.6 per cent and 13.3 per cent respectively in production in the month of June. While MCL produced 12 MT of coal, CCL output was 3.8 MT.
The production of Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL) and Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL) declined by 33.6 per cent and 6.9 per cent respectively.
