Coal Secretary, CIL Chairman visit JSP’s Coal Gasification at Angul

Coal Secretary Amritlal Meena and Chairman of Coal India Limited (CIL) Pramod Agrawal accompanied by Jindal Steel and Power (JSP) Chairman Naveen Jindal visited the company’s Angul facility in Odisha and acquainted with the operation of the coal gasification plant.

The officials’ visit is seen as a move to explore the option of using clean coal techniques to make the nation self-reliant in the energy sector.

Naveen Jindal along with senior officials of the company briefed them about how gasification is the future of coal. They said coal gasification would play an important role in reducing the amount of carbon in the atmosphere and realizing the dream of self-reliant India in the field of energy. It could be a good domestic substitute for the import of energy sources, they added.

JSP’s Officials said they were elated to receive Meena and Agrawal.

Coal gasification plant set up at 6 million tonne per annum Angul Steel Complex has a capacity of 2,25,000 common cubic meters per hour. In view of steel production, it is the first and world’s largest coal gasification plant. JSP is the only steel producer in the world using syn-gas obtained through coal gasification in producing steel from the DRI plant and other emitting the least amount of carbon as compared to other methods.

The Coal Gasification Plant of Angul Steel Complex becomes a “Technology Demonstrator” and is being appreciated by the industries around the world. The plant is also helpful in the production of blue hydrogen because syn-gas contains 60 percent hydrogen.

Vice-Chairman of JSP Advisory Group V R Sharma, CEO-Steel Business Dinesh Kumar Saraogi and Executive Director Damodar Mittal along with senior officials of the company were present on the occasion.
