The hands that once committed crime are now preparing coats for stray cows to ward off chill in Uttar Pradesh’s Kaushambi district.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday praised the efforts of the inmates of Kaushambi District Jail in his program Mann Ki Baat. In Kaushambi district jail, inmates are preparing coats from the torn blankets to protect the cows in combating winter cold.

“The inmates of Kaushambi District Jail are doing unmatched work,” the Prime Minister said.

The prisoners sewed the torn and old blankets kept in the godown with jute bags and sacks to prepare coats for cows and other animals. The torn or useless blankets are collected from Kaushambi and nearby districts. These coats are sent to a nearby cowshed.

The Prime Minister interacted with the prisoners through a video conference and endorsed the humanity approach of the inmates. “Let us all encourage this kind of endeavor full of care for others and the needless. The people of the country are undergoing change,” he said, adding that new potential has been created in the country to make India self-sufficient and self-reliant.

Kaushambi Jail Superintendent BS Mukund said that the prisoners of Kaushambi jail said a group of ten prisoners were working to make coats. At present, a packet of 50 coats is being supplied to a cowshed in Manjhanpur.
