Chandigarh, April 9

After facing a humiliating defeat that has completely demoralised the cadre, Congress on Saturday picked up young face to lead the party and take on newly inducted Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government led by 48-year-old Bhagwant Singh Mann in Punjab.

Former Punjab Transport Minister Amrinder Singh Brar alias Raja Warring was on Saturday appointed Punjab Congress President, days after Navjot Singh Sidhu tendered his resignation from the post after the party’s debacle in the recent state elections. The 45-year-old leader represents Gidderbaha in the state assembly and is a third time MLA. He was earlier hand-picked by Rahul Gandhi to lead the Indian Youth Congress.

Warring faces an onerous task of uniting a faction-ridden state unit and countering the ruling AAP which has a massive mandate with 92 out of 117 assembly MLAs.

The party also named ex-Punjab Congress President Partap Singh Bajwa as the leader of Congress Legislature Party in the Punjab Assembly.

By appointing a former Indian Youth Congress and Gidderbaha MLA Raja Warring as the PPCC chief, the Congress high command has given preference to young face to fight the AAP party in the streets while positioning a seasoned leader and a former MP as CLP leader to take on the Bhagwant Mann-led inside the House.

The Congress has tried to maintain the region, experience and caste balance with the appointment of the two leaders.
