A Congress leader was shot dead in broad daylight in Bilaspur district of Chhattisgarh on Wednesday afternoon.
The victim was identified as Sanjeev Tripathi, the District General Secretary of the ruling Congress party in Chhattisgarh. He was going to some place when the assailants intercepted his vehicle on the Sakri by-pass and fired at him point plank.
Sources said the bullets hit him on his head and the Congress leader collapsed on the spot. A few persons were present on the spot but none dared to intervene and stop the assailants, who were in two different cars. They fled the spot after committing the crime.
Soon after getting information, senior police officials rushed to the spot and started the investigation. Reports said the assailants were masked and could not be identified.
Sources said the slain Congress leader had criminal background and had been earlier booked for heinous crimes including attempt to murder. In the recent incident, an offence was registered against him for attempting to murder his brother. Tripathi had taken anticipatory bail.
The land dispute is cited to be one of the possible reasons for the broad daylight murder of Tripathi. However, police have launched a thorough investigation into the incident and are tracing the vehicles in which the assailants fled the spot.
