Chandigarh, September 18
A flurry of hectic political activity has started in the Punjab Congress in Chandigarh hours before AICC-appointed observers Harish Chaudhary and Ajay Makan and Punjab Affairs incharge Harish Rawat are scheduled to arrive here to hold a meeting of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP).
The CLP meeting has been reportedly necessitated after 40 Congress MLAs sent letter to the high command reportedly asking for a change. The agenda of the CLP meeting called by the party high command is to choose the new CLP leader in place of Captain Amarinder Singh, though the party has not officially announced it. The MLAs are likely to approve a single-line agenda authorising party president Sonia Gandhi to elect the new leader.
A senior Congress leader told News Riveting that the party high command had asked Captain Singh to put in his papers. However, his reluctance had forced the party to convene the CLP meeting and take the decision to elect a new leader, he added. The Chief Minister had convened the meeting of his close aides at 2 pm today to prepare the strategy on his part.
Sunil Jakhar, Partap Bajwa and Sukhjinder Radhawa are reported to be the front runner for the Chief Minister post.
The anti-CM camp has been busy for the past few days mobilising MLAs against Captain Singh. The jubilation in the camp indicated a major political upheaval in the Punjab Congress.
Punjab Pradesh Congress Chief Navjot Singh Sidhu, who is leading the camp and crusade against Captain, is at the PCC office ahead of the meeting.
