Team News Riveting

Prime Minister Narendra Modi underlined the alleged failure of the World Health Organisation (WHO) in tracing out the origin of COVID that inflicted global devastation.

Without naming China, Modi hit out and questioned the credibility of multilateral institutions and called for its reforms before it became irrelevant. He was delivering his fourth address to the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

He also put the World Bank under the scanner of the ease of doing business index as China had influenced the rankings, and called for improving the effectiveness and reliability of the UN and its organs.

The ineffectiveness of such institutions during the climate and the Afghan crises has deepened the issues, he said and called for reforms in the UN and the UNSC.

The Prime Minister frequently highlighted India’s democratic credentials and citing his own example. He said its strength was demonstrated when “a little boy” who would help his father at the railway station was today addressing the UNGA for the fourth time as PM of India.

“I represent a country that is proud to be known as the mother of democracy. On 15th of August this year, India entered into the 75th year of its independence,” the Prime Minister added.

Referring to International issues, the Prime Minister said it was absolutely essential that terrorists were denied use of Afghanistan’s territory. The world also needed to ensure that no country tries to take advantage of the delicate situation in Afghanistan and use it for its vested interests, he said, referring to Pakistan without naming.

“At this time, people of Afghanistan, women and children, minorities need help. We must fulfill our duties by providing them with help,’’ the Prime Minister said.
