The Trinamool Congress (TMC) of Mamata Banerjee foiled the opposition unity against the BJP as it cleared communicated it was not interest to be an ally of any alliance headed by Congress.
The West Bengal’s ruling party is a major constituent of the anti-BJP opposition coalition and any alliance without it will not be much effective against the BJP. The TMC has conveyed that it will not participate in any meeting called by the Congress party ahead of the winter session of parliament starting Monday.
Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge has called for a meeting of all opposition parties in his chambers on Monday morning. With TMC abstaining, other parties like the Aam Aadmi Party and Samajwadi Party, among others who were not part of the UPA, could also stay away from the meeting. In the last Parliament session, most opposition parties barring the Bahujan Samaj Party were seen united.
The fighting between the Congress and the TMC has put the opposition parties in a fix. The rift between the two are further widening with both accusing each other of helping the BJP.
The TMC has given Congress a jolt in Goa and Meghalaya, where 12 of the 17 Congress MLAs joined Mamata’s party. The development has effectively reduced the Congress’s presence in the two states. In Assam, Goa, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Haryana too, the TMC is expanding its footprint at Congress’s cost.
