Kalahandi (Odisha), August 8
The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) spoiled the strategy of the outlawed Communist Party of India (Maoist) to inflict major strikes during the 75th Independence Day in Kalahandi district of Odisha.
The alert jawans of the CRPF stormed a Maoist hideout in Niyamgiri hills of Kalahandi and seized a huge cache of explosives, arms and ammunition besides Mao literature. The arms and ammunition were reportedly stocked to strike as this year’s I-Day has a historic significance. Being the 75th anniversary. India commemorates it as “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav” with pomp.
The security personnel of the para-military force started a combing operation on Saturday in Niyamgiri forest area. The sniffer dogs discovered the ammunition in Dadijhola near Niyamgiri Hills under Lanjigarh police station of Kalahandi district.
The jawans seized two guns, gelatin sticks, 50 detonators, batteries, electric wire, ropes, 15 kg urea, 3 steel tiffin bombs, 35 live bullets, torch and other incriminating materials with the help of sniffing dogs.
“Thanks to the effort by the sniffing dogs, we could seize the explosives, arms and ammunition,” said Mitu Roy, second-in-command of CRPF’s 4th battalion stationed in Rayagada, said.
“A banner of CPI Maoist Baghuna Division was also recovered from the spot. It is suspected that the group could have hidden the arms and ammunition for any ambush,” Roy said, adding that a massive search operation had been launched in the area.
The security forces had received vital inputs that Maoists were camping in the area for the last few days and were planning a major ambush on Independence Day.
