The Korba police have launched a special drive for the deaddiction of Chhattisgarh’s industrial hub; cracking down on the drug peddlers and illicit liquor traders.
Codenamed Nijaat (riddance), the campaign under the supervision of Korba Superintendent of Police Santosh Singh, is a mix of action and awareness. The 2011-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer has been running such campaigns wherever he is posted.
The Korba Police launched the campaign in the month of July against drugs, narcotics, illicit liquor and intoxicants. The drive yielded the results as 1054 persons in 982 cases registered under the Excise and NDPS Act have been apprehended in the last four months. Besides, 2022 liters of liquor have been confiscated.
In a recent meeting, Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel has directed the police to take stringent action against the drugs and illegal sale of liquor. Under the guidance of Director General of Police Ashok Juneja and Bilaspur Inspector General of Police Ratanlal Dangi, the Korba police began the operation. Of the cases, 964 were related to the Excise Act in which 1033 persons were arrested.
Out of the total arrested persons under the campaign, 102 booked under non-bailable offences have been sent to jail. The arrested include a good number created nuisance and riot at the public places in inebriated condition. They were booked under Section 36 (f) as the action came as a big jolt for the miscreants involved in similar crime.
The police also arrested 21 persons in 18 cases under the NDPS Act. Eight motorcycles used for transporting large quantities of ganja, intoxicating tablets, cough syrups, hookahs have also been seized.
Action has been taken under the COTPA Act against the shopkeepers selling intoxicants in the restricted area near the school-college. Apart from this, a total of 317 public awareness programs have been conducted in the district on a large scale. In the hot-bazaars, school-colleges, festivals, other religious events etc., awareness is being promoted through chariots, jingles, meetings, rallies, processions etc.
De-addiction cells have also been set up in the police stations of the district for counseling of drug addicts. All the people and sections of the society are participating in this campaign and unprecedented public support is being received.
In the same year, the Bureau of Police Research and Development, an organization of the Ministry of Home Affairs, included the Chhattisgarh Police’s Nijaat Abhiyan among the 30 best smart-policing campaigns in the country. The nationally recognized zero-tolerance action and massive public-awareness program, Nijaat Abhiyan, has now started showing fruitful results in Korba district as well.
