New Delhi, December 1

A senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader said that the name of Devendra Fadnavis had been finalised as the new Chief Minister of Maharashtra.

India TV quoted the news agency PTI and said the leader claimed Fadnavis would be formally elected as the legislature party leader in a meeting to be held either on December 2 or 3.

Earlier in the day, acting Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde reiterated that he would support the BJP’s pick for the Chief Minister. Shidhe, who was reportedly upset over not being given the home ministry, held a press conference at his native villata in Satara and clarified that he is not disappointed over anything and will support to BJP chief minister.

However, he did not give any hint about his next role in the Mahayuti government. Responding to queries that his son Shrikant Shinde might get the deputy Chief Minister’s post and Shiv Sena was keen on the Home portfolio, Shinde said the Mahayuti allies- BJP, NCP, and Shiv Sena- would decide the government formation through consensus after sitting together.

The oath-taking ceremony of the new Mahayuti government is scheduled for December 5 evening at the Azad Maidan in south Mumbai. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and senior union ministers will attend it.

The Mahayuti won 230 of the 288 assembly seats. The BJP led with 132 seats, while the Shiv Sena got 57 and NCP 41.
