The humiliating defeated in Nandigram has cast its shadow in Bhabanipur by-election as Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee appears anxious while seeking votes.
She is contesting the by-election to get elected to the legislative assembly and retain the post of Chief Minister. Despite losing the election from Nandigram, she took oath as the Chief Minister on May 5 and was required to get elected to the assembly within six months.
“If you don’t vote for me, I will not remain the chief minister. If you want to see me as chief minister, vote for me. Every vote is important for me,” Mamata made an impassioned speech at two public meetings held at Ekbalpore and Chetla localities in the constituency.
Political observers said the recent Nandigram defeat might be playing on her mind. She would overcome adversity was what she thrives on, they said, adding that but the defensive speech of Mamata Banerjee did not appeal to her character.
After her stunning debut in parliamentary politics in 1984, Mamata lost the election in 1989. In the last three decades, it was Nandigram where she tasted defeat.
Mamata’s bete noire Suvendu Adhikary, who defeated her in Nandigram, started campaign for party nominee Priyanka Tibrewal on the same day and urged voters to consider the “ills of the state government” and not go by persona.
