New Delhi, September 29
Former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Digvijaya Singh on Thursday collected nomination papers for the party president election.
He is likely to file his nomination on Friday. “I have taken the nomination papers and most probably I will file my nominations tomorrow,” Singh told reporters at the AICC headquarters.
Singh arrived in Delhi late on Wednesday night leaving the Bharat Jodo Yatra of Rahul Gandhi midway. He reached the AICC headquarters and collected the nomination papers. The filing of nominations for the election to the post of party president ends at 3 pm on Friday.
So far, there’s only Shashi Tharoor in the race and Gehlot, a previous consensus face, appears to be disinterested to take up party chief post at the post of his current job. Senior general secretary of Congress Mukul Wasnik met Gehlot who is expected to meet Sonia later on Thursday.
Gehlot is in New Delhi and has been waiting appointment of Sonia. Sources said she would convince Gehlot to take up party chief post and leave the matter of Rajasthan chief minister to her.
If the party leadership fails to convince Gehlot, Digvijaya Singh will come in the fray as the second plan of the Congress party. Tharoor is also likely to file papers on Friday.
The Congress chief poll is scheduled for October 17.
