Two doctors were thrashed in a government hospital in Chhattisgarh’s Jashpur district last night even as a Parliamentary Secretary and the District Collector watched the incident as mute spectators.

U D Minj, Parliamentary Secretary who enjoys the rank of minister of state along with District Collector Ritesh Agrawal reached Tuldula primary health centre for inspection. A group of supporters were also accompanying Minj, who is also Congress legislator from the Kunkuri assembly constituency.

Sources said the supporters of the minister allegedly bashed up the doctors in an inebriated state. When the incident happened, Minj and District Collector were reportedly present in the premises.

The accused abused the doctors in front of other staff and slapped them. Humiliated with the incident that took place in full public glare, Dr Maheshwar Manik and Dr Nitish Sonwani tendered their resignation in the night itself.

In the letter addressed to the Block Medical Officer, both the doctors narrated the incident and referred to the clips captured in the close-circuit cameras installed in the hospital premises.

As the issue flared up with opposition BJP raking up the matter, the District Collector ordered an enquiry and constituted a team to probe the incident.
