The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday announced to field former Jharkhand Governor Draupadi Murmu as National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate for the ensuing Presidential poll.
BJP National President JP Nadda said discussions were held on 20 names and it was decided to opt for a women candidate from East India belonging to the tribal community. She belongs to Santal family, a tribal ethnic group.
Murmu, if elected, will be the first tribal President of the country.
Born on June 20, 1958 in Baidaposi village of Mayurbhanj district in Odisha, was the ninth Governor of Jharkhand and the first to complete the five-year term (2015-2021) in the state since its formation in the year 2000.
She is the first woman Governor of Jharkhand and first woman and tribal leader from Odisha to be appointed a Governor in an Indian state.
