Himanshu Pandey, an engineering graduate from Haldwani in Uttarakhand has secured All India Rank (AIR) 1 in the Combined Defence Services (CDS) examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).

His father Kamal Pandey has been working as a driver in a private firm.

The results were declared on Friday and UPSC has recommended a total of 142 candidates for admission to the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Indian Naval Academy (INA) and Air Force Academy. Himanshu, 22-year-old, would be joining IMA to be inducted in the Indian Army.

The determination of Himanshu to join the army and serve the motherland propelled him to succeed despite failing in initial attempts. He cleared the written exam twice but failed in the physical. But he did not give up as his only goal was to serve the country by joining the armed forces. In the third attempt, he not only succeeded but secured the first position in the prestigious Combined Defence Services exam.

Himanshu said he solely focussed on the CDS as it was his mission. He secured 95 per cent marks in class 12th boards at ABM School, Haldwani and did his BTech from Dwarahat Engineering College.
