Earthquake hits northern Chhattisgarh, Coal India mine: Two employees injured

Raipur, July 29

An earthquake of light magnitude hit the northern part of Chhattisgarh with the reported epicentre at a coal mine run by the state-run Coal India Limited’s subsidiary, South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL).

The tremor occurred late in the night in and around Baikunthpur area of Koriya district. Officials said it measured 4.6 on the Richter Scale.

However, no loss of life or property was reported. Two employees of SECL working in the Churcha coal mine were injured when they tried to run for shelter following the shock. A chaos erupted in the SECL mine following the incident.

The two injured employees were shifted to a hospital in Bilaspur where their condition is reported to be stable.

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel talked to the district administration officials Friday morning and took stock of the situation. He had directed the officials to provide best medical care to the injured.
