New Delhi, June 25
Prime Minister Narendra Modi was on Sunday conferred with the ‘Order of the Nile’, Egypt’s highest honour.
In a special ceremony at the Presidency in Cairo on June 25, 2023, President of the Arab Republic of Egypt, Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, conferred Prime Minister Narendra Modi with the ‘Order of the Nile’, the highest civilian award of Egypt. Prime Minister thanked President Sisi for the honor on behalf of the people of India.
The Order of the Nile was established in 1915 by Sultan Hussein Kamel of Egypt for award to persons who had rendered useful service to the country. It ranked beneath the Order of Ismail and was frequently awarded to British officers and officials serving in Egypt, as well as distinguished Egyptian citizens.
After Egypt became a Republic in 1953, the Order of the Nile was reconstituted to serve as Egypt’s highest state honor. It is now conferred upon heads of states, crown princes, and vice presidents who offer Egypt or humanity invaluable services. The ‘Order of the Nile’ is a pure gold collar consisting of three-square gold units comprising Pharaonic symbols.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is the first Indian to receive the award. The other notable figures from the international community to receive the award include King Hussein of Jordan (1955), Marshal Josip Broz Tito, President of the Federal People’s Republic of Yugoslavia (1956), Professor Mohamed ElBaradei, former Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (1999), President Jimmy Carter, President of the United States (1979), Emperor Akihito of Japan (1993), Nelson Mandela, former President of South Africa (1999), Adly Mansour, acting President of Egypt (2013) and Dr Ekmeleddin, Secretary-General of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (2015).
