Election commission announces poll dates for four states and UT starting April 9

The Election Commission of India on Sunday announced the dates of assembly elections for West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam and the Union Territory of Puducherry. 

Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar said Bengal would go to polls in two phases on April 23 and April 29. Of the 294 constituencies in the state, 152 will go to the polls in first phase and remaining 142 seats in the second.

Assam, Keralam and Puducherry to vote on April 9 in a single phase while the highly anticipated state assembly polls in Tamil Nadu will take place on April 23. The results will be declared on May 4.

The Chief Election Commissioner said around 17.4 crore voters would cast their votes across West Bengal, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry. The polling will be held at 2.19 lakh polling stations in the four states and the union territory. He added that over 25 lakh election officials will be on duty.
