An ex-police officer in Thailand killed at least 24 children and 11 adults at a day care center.
It is the deadliest mass shooting in Thailand’s history. The gunman also stabbed children and a pregnant teacher, say officials, then fatally shot his wife, son and himself.
There were 24 children among the victims of the suspected gunman, who police said had been discharged from the service for drug-related reasons. About 30 children were at the centre when the gunman came in around lunchtime, a senior district official said. The man, identified as 34-year-old Pol Cpl Panya, first shot four or five staff, including a teacher who was eight months pregnant, he added.
At least, 12 people were injured in the incident. Of them, condition of eight was reported to be critical.
Thursday’s rampage was the worst mass shooting in the country since a soldier opened fire at the Terminal 21 shopping mall and other locations in Nakhon Ratchasima on Feb 8, 2020. He killed 29 people and… He killed 29 people and wounded 58 others before being shot dead by police 18 hours after the incident began.
Police suspected that Panya, was under the influence of drugs at the time of the attack. He was believed to be under a lot of stress as he was due to appear in court on drug charges on Friday.
Police had issued a warning to the public to beware of a dangerous gunman fleeing in a white pickup truck after the incident. Police who were in pursuit of the suspect found the pickup had been completely burned near his house. When police entered the house, they found Panya’s wife and young son had been killed by Panya before shooting himself.
