The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has named 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pa., as the suspect in the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.

The attack at the Butler, Pa., rally left one spectator dead and critically injured two others.  A man fired “multiple shots” toward the stage during former President’s rally in Butler, Pa., on Saturday at around 6:15 pm.

Trump was rushed off the stage, blood visible around his right ear. He later said in a post on Truth Social, his social media platform, that he had been “shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear.” Trump was taken to a hospital and the Secret Service said he was “safe.”

According to reports, Trump was back on his feet. He had just been shot at, his white shirt was undone and his red hat was no longer on his head. Blood streaked across his face as riflemen patrolled the perimeter of the stage. A pack of Secret Service agents pressed their bodies against his. “We’ve got to move, we’ve got to move,” one pleaded.

The suspected shooter, who was killed, used an AR-15-style semiautomatic rifle to carry out the attack, a U.S. official said, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss the early stages of the investigation.

Senior Trump campaign and Republican Party officials reiterated in a statement shortly after 9:30 p.m. that Trump “is doing well and grateful to law enforcement and first responders for their fast action.”

Crooks, the gunman, was positioned on a rooftop approximately 150 yards from the rally venue. A witness told BBC news he had tried to alert local law enforcement of the sniper moments before he opened fire.

The FBI said Crooks, 20, of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, fired multiple shots from an “elevated position” outside of the Trump rally before Secret Service personnel “neutralized” the shooter, the law enforcement agency said.

The FBI hadn’t established a motive as of early Sunday morning.

The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi condemned the attack on former President of Unites States of America, Donald Trump. The Prime Minister posted on X : “Deeply concerned by the attack on my friend, former President Donald Trump. Strongly condemn the incident. Violence has no place in politics and democracies. Wish him speedy recovery.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the deceased, those injured and the American people,” Modi added.
