Bathinda, April 12

Four persons were killed in a shooting incident at the strategically important Bathinda Military Station in Punjab in the wee hours of Wednesday.

The Punjab Police have termed it as a ‘fratricidal incident’, denying any link of a terror attack or outside involvement. A senior officer of Punjab police said a firing incident was reported in the early hours of the morning around 4.35 am inside the Bathinda Military Station.

Station Quick Reaction Teams were activated and the area was cordoned off, the officer added.

Punjab’s Additional Director General of Police, S P S Parmar said, “It is not a terrorist attack, it is not an attack from outside. It is a fratricidal incident”.

Bathinda is an important military installation including the headquarters of 10 Corps. It comes under the jurisdiction of the Jaipur-based South Western Command of the Indian Army.

The station also houses a large number of operational Indian Army units and other static establishments.

The incident took place near the officers’ mess of an artillery unit based at the station, sources said, adding that an INSAS rifle from the unit and some rounds of ammunition had gone missing from the unit premises two days ago.

Though the Indian Army had not come out with any statement, sources said as per the procedure, a court of inquiry would investigate the matter.
