Five including 2 children missing after pickup plunges into canal in Chhattisgarh

Raipur, April 13

An over-speed pickup vehicle went out of control and overturned in a roadside canal in Chhattisgarh’s Korba district on Sunday.

At the time of the accident, there were 12 people in the pickup vehicle. Of which 3 women and 2 children were swept away in the strong current of water. The remaining people somehow saved their lives.

According to the information, the incident took place near village Mukundpur near Madwarani-Jarve under Urga police station area. A dozen people of a family from Sakti district had left in a pickup vehicle to attend the Korba Chhathi program.

The vehicle was recklessly driven. The driver lost control over the steering near village Mukundpur located near Madwarani-Jarve of Urga police station area and the vehicle plunged into the canal. The driver of the pickup fled from the spot.

Some of the family members were able to swim out of the canal, while 2 children including 3 women in the pickup were swept away in the strong current of the canal. The villagers from nearby places were first to reach the spot and start the rescue operation.

Soon after getting information of the accident, the rescue team from the district administration led by Korba Superintendent of Police Siddharth Tiwari reached the spot. The divers of the home guards started the rescue.

The rescue teams had launched an operation to trace the five people missing. The irrigation department has been asked to reduce the water flow in the canal so that the level could drop and facilitate the teams. A team of divers also left for village Nagarda of Sakti district to track the people drowned in the canal.

The pickup vehicle has been fished out of the canal.
