Former DGP, wife booked for son’s murder

Punjab’s former Director General of Police Mohammad Mustafa, his wife Razia Sultana are among four who have been booked by Haryana Police in connection with the death of their son Akil Akhter.

Sultana is a former minister in Punjab. The FIR has been lodged under Sections 103 (1) and 61, which deal with murder and criminal conspiracy charges. Akhter died under “suspicious circumstances” on October 16 at his residence at Sector 4, MDC in Panchkula.

Panchkula DCP Srishti Gupta said the family members informed the police, and their statement was recorded. No foul play was initially suspected, and the body was handed over to the family for last rites after a post-mortem examination, she said.

Subsequently, certain social media posts and videos surfaced, purportedly made by the deceased prior to his death. It alleged personal disputes and apprehensions about threats to his life. “On October 17, a complaint was received from Shamshuddin of Malerkotla, Punjab, alleging foul play in the incident,” the DCP said.

In view of the complaint and the contents of the social media posts, the police on Monday lodged an FIR under Section 103(1), 61 BNS at Police Station MDC, Panchkula. Subsequently, the Panchkula police on Tuesday said Mustafa, Sultana, and Akhter’s sister have been booked.

A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted under the supervision of an ACP-rank officer. The SIT will conduct a thorough and scientific probe into all aspects surrounding the case, she said.

“It is reiterated that the investigation shall be conducted with an open mind and without any prejudice, ensuring that no guilty person is spared and no innocent person suffers. The Panchkula Police remain committed to upholding transparency and justice in this matter,” the police statement said.
