Funeral clash for Islam converted

Family members of a person converted to Islam clashed over his funeral in Indore.

Salim Khan (48), a truck driver, had embraced Islam. Born Prakash Malviya in a Hindu family of Dewas, he had changed his name to Salim Khan and accordingly updated in official records.

The man died at Maharaja Yeshwantrao hospital in Indore on Sunday night. The body was shifted to the mortuary. The family members of the deceased today morning came to take the body but entered into a verbal clash for the funeral rituals.

The deceased’s mother, Soram Bai wanted him to be cremated as per Vedic rituals as the entire family still followed the Hindu religion. Salim’s daughter Rani Sheikh contested and wanted him to be buried under Islamic customs. As the dispute flared up in the hospital mortuary, police rushed to the spot and took the situation under its control.

After discussion with the family members, the police convinced them to take the body to his paternal home for Hindu rituals and then burial as per Islamic customs.
