Gas disaster at SAIL-Bhilai plant in Chhattisgarh

Three contract labourers were injured in a suspected gas leak that took place in Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP), the Chhattisgarh-based entity of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), on Wednesday.

The affected people have been admitted to the Bhilai Sector 9 hospital, which is run by the SAIL. The condition of one worker was reported to be critical.

The BSP management, in a statement issued, said three contract workers engaged in capital repair work in Blast Furnace-6 of Bhilai Steel Plant were exposed to gas on Wednesday. Around 1.30 pm, contract workers Mohammad Meraaj (36 years old), Haricharan (47 years old) and Mohan Lal Gupta (55 years old) were resting after having food when they started feeling suffocation,

Their condition suddenly started to deteriorate. The nearby employees informed the higher authorities and an ambulance was immediately sent to the spot. The workers were having trouble breathing because of the Blast Furnace gas, the BSP management said.

They were immediately brought to the Main Medical Post, from where he was referred to Sector 9 Hospital. The laborers have been admitted to the ICU due to gas exposure. “The health of two laborers is fine and improving and one laborer has been kept under special care,” the company said.

Last month, a contractual worker of Bhilai Steel Plant was killed after a stopper fell on him following a collision between two cranes. The worker was wearing a helmet but suffered fatal injuries.
