Visakhapatnam, June 16
Six Maoists including three women cadres were killed in a fierce gun-battle between the Left-Wing Extremists and elite Greyhounds forces in the forests of Theegalametta in Visakhapatnam today morning.
Acting on a tip-off and intelligence inputs, the commandos of Greyhounds stormed at Theegalametta forest areas (Koyyru surrounding areas) under police station limits of Mampa in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh in the wee hours of Wednesday. During the combating operation, the security personnel contacted the rebels who opened fire.
The Greyhounds commandos retaliated and the encounter lasted for over half-an-hour. The rebels later fled into the forests.
During the search operation that followed the encounter, security forces discovered six bodies including three women cadres of Maoists. Additional forces had reached the spot to reinforce the search operation as a few Maoists had been severely wounded and were evacuated from the spot.
The identification of the bodies was in progress. Of the killed, one had been suspected to be a commander of the outlawed group.
Besides one AK-47, security forces had recovered one SLR, one carbine, three .303 rifles and one tapancha from the spot.
