The Election Commission of India on Thursday announced assembly polls in Gujarat; while voting to be conducted in two phases on December 1 and December 5.
The counting of votes will be taken up on December 8 along with Himachal Pradesh. On October 14, the Commission had announced the election schedule for the Himachal Pradesh Assembly, which will take place on November 12 in a single-phase.
The term of the 182-member Gujarat legislative Assembly ends on February 18, 2023.
Announcing the decision of the poll panel Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar said, 89 assembly segments will go to the polls in the first phase on December 1, and 93 seats in second phase on December 5.
The CEC began his press conference while offering his condolences to those, who were killed in the recent Morbi suspension bridge collapse incident.
The CEC said over 4.9 crore electors would be eligible to vote this year. There would be more than 51,000 polling stations, which would be set up, including more than 34,000 in rural areas.
Ahead of the polls, the Centre has deployed 160 companies of the Central Armed Police Forces to ensure free and fair elections the state.
The term of the 182-member state assembly ends on February 18, 2023. With the announcement of the election schedule, the Model Code of Conduct has (MCC) come into effect in the state.
Gujarat is going to witness a three-cornered contest with the BJP, Congress and the AAP in the fray. The BJP has been in power in the state , which is also the home state of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, for over two decades.
