Hot Strip Mill-II of SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant surpasses 5 MT HR coil production milestone

The State-of-the-art Hot Strip Mill-2 (HSM-2) of SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) surpassed the significant milestone of 5 Million Tonne (MT) of Hot Rolled (HR) Coil Production on 16th July, 2024.

Atanu Bhowmick, Director In-Charge (DIC) visited HSM-2 Shop floor on 17th July, 2024 and joined the collective in celebrating the landmark. He was accompanied by S R Surywanshi, ED (Works), Tarun Misra, ED (HR) with the additional charge of ED (Projects), Alok Verma, ED (Mines), and Anil Kumar, CGM (MM) and acting ED (MM). Many CGMs, HODs, senior officers of the plant and a large number of employees of HSM-2 were present on the occasion.

It is noteworthy that the last 1 MT HR Coil production was achieved in record 143 days. Since producing its first 1 MT of HR Coil in 210 days on 27th October, 2022, the ultra-modern mill has consistently improved its performance, achieving subsequent MT productions in 175, 154, and 150 days respectively.

Congratulating the collective the DIC said, “Although the journey has been phenomenally good for the mill, the destination is beyond the horizon. HSM-2 will significantly determine the profitability of RSP. I am sure the young HSM-2 team will guide the plant to a new era of success.” He urged the team to set an ambitious target of achieving the next Million Tonnes of HR Coil production in 100 days. Bhowmick also emphasized the importance of consistency, quality, producing more special steel, and ensuring total safety with a focus on ‘Surakshya Ghar Se Ghar Tak’. He also cut a celebratory cake to mark the occasion.

Suryawanshi, while congratulating the team for their consistent performance, urged them to focus on critical parameters such as quality, value addition, and cost optimization to remain competitive in the market. Misra applauded the unit’s excellent production chain and encouraged them to achieve new milestones and success stories for the steel plant.

Verma spoke on the significant role of HSM-2 in the progress of the plant and emphasized upon quality, consistency and effective maintenance. Anil Kumar reiterated the support of MM Department to meet the critical requirements of the Mill.

At the outset, R K Muduly, CGM (HSM-2) welcomed the gathering and briefly deliberated on the journey of the Mill. He also spoke on the critical support extended by all the associated departments of the Mill. A film showcasing the highlights of the Mill since the inception was shown on the occasion. D K Yadav, GM In Charge, HSM-2 (Operation) proposed a formal vote of thanks at the end.
