She was hospitalized for the last one month in a Mumbai hospital and breathe her last Sunday morning. The undivided Madhya Pradesh has a glorious memory with Lata Mangeshkar.
She was born in Indore city on 28 September 1929 in the Sikh locality. The Chalnuma house where she was born was known as Wagh Saheb ke Bada at that time. She lived in this house in Indore till the age of seven. After this her family moved to Maharashtra.
After Lata ji left Indore, the house was bought by a Muslim family. They lived here for a few years and then sold it to one Balwant Singh. Balwant Singh lived in the house for a long time. Later he sold it to one Nitin Mehta’s family. The Mehta family has opened a clothing showroom on the front portion of the house.
The Mehta family first got the house renovated. The family worships Lata ji as a goddess. They seek her blessings every day before opening the showroom. The owner has made a mural of Lata ji in a part of the showroom.
Since birth, Lata ji spent most of her life in Mumbai, but she never forgot Indore. She is very happy to meet the people of her place of birth. She still remembers the Khau Gali of Indore’s bullion. She was very fond of Gulab Jamun, Rabri and Dahi Bade here. Meeting the people of Indore, she still often asks- Sarafa tasach ahe ka? (Is the bullion still the same?).
The state government of Madhya Pradesh instituted a award in his name in 1984. The award consists of a certificate of merit and a cash prize.
