When the personnel from the National Investigation Agency (NIA) landed in Thiruvananthapuram on Thursday last, the Kerala police did not have any information that a major development was going to take place in the state.
For, the intelligence wing of Kerala police had been literally “inactive” for months. While the movement of NIA officials went off their radar, the intelligence wing had even no clue about the presence of hardcore militants of Al Qaeda in the state.
The intelligence wing is the most important establishment of any state. Sources said for the last many months, Kerala police’s intelligence wing has been reported to be without a chief. This had severely affected the working of the wing.
The NIA officials were well aware of the updates available with the Kerala police. After completing all the formalities, on Friday midnight they informed the Kerala police that they were on an important mission and would require force.
As per protocol, the state police had to provide the escort and force to the central agencies. But the NIA officials did not inform state police about the mission and asked to send the force to the place where they were staying on Saturday morning.
In the early morning raid, the NIA nabbed Al Qaeda men planning a major strike in vital installations. Besides Murshid Hassan, Yakoob Bishwas and Morshraf Hussien staying in Ernakulam while six others including Najmus Sakib, Abu Sufiyan, Mainul Mondal, Leu Yean Ahmed, Al Mamun Kamal and Atitur Rehman were arrested in Bengal’s Murshidabad.
The three arrested in Kerala had been working in shops and no effort was made either by the owner or the police to verify their identity. This despite, all three were originally native of West Bengal.
