Ranchi, July 16
A Ranchi court has granted bail to the 2019-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, Sayyed Riyaz who was arrested on July 6 in connection with a sexual harassment case.
The Jharkhand government suspended the officer on July 8. He was posted as Sub Divisional Magistrate of Khunti. The action against the bureaucrat came after an IIT student lodged complaint of sexual harassment.
Riyaz’s wife is also an IAS officer and is currently posted in Janjgir-Champa district of Chhattisgarh.
The incident took place when a group of IIT students went to the officer’s residence as part of their study programme. A group of 20 IIT students had come to Khunti for an academic tour and internship.
It is alleged that the SDM had called the girl students to his residence for a party where alcoholic drinks were served. The SDM is accused of taking the victim aside on the pretext of talking to her and started speaking obscenely with her.
He also tried to kiss the girl. The victim is studying in IIT Indore, Madhya Pradesh. She anyhow escaped from his clutches and informed the matter to the colleagues. The girls immediately left the venue and rushed to the police station to lodge a complaint against the IAS officer.
As the students were adamant, the police lodged a complaint under sections 376D, 376A, 323, 504, and 506 of the IPC and the POCSO Act.
The First Additional Session Judge, Sanjay Kumar today granted bail to the officer.
