Jamshedpur, July 23
Indian Institute of Metals (IIM), Jamshedpur Chapter organised a function on Thursday to felicitate the awardees who were associated with it and received prestigious awards at a function in February, 2021.
The function was conducted on an online platform due to government restrictions imposed by the pandemic.
Dr Mita Tarafder, Chief Scientist of NML and the Chairperson of IIM, Jamshedpur Chapter delivered the welcome address. It was followed by virtual felicitation of awardees. The professionals who received awards in different categories are as follows:
1. Dr Sanjay Chandra, ex Tata steel recipient of IIM Fellowship
2. Dr A N Bhagat, Tata Steel recipient of IIM Certificate of Honour
3. Ms Anouska Pal recipient of IIM Vidya Bharathi Prize
4. Mr Goutam Ghosh, Tata Steel recipient of ATM Oral Presentation Award
5. Mr Pankaj Kumar, Tata Steel recipient of ATM Poster Presentation Award
6. Dr Durga Prasad, Tata Steel recipient of ATM Metallography Contest Award
7. Mr Nemai Chand Gorain, Tata Steel recipient of M S Khan Memorial Award
Dr A N Bhagat, Vice Chairman of IIM, Jamshedpur Chapter introduced Dr Soumitra Tarafder, Chief Scientist of CSIR-NML and the speaker of M S Khan Memorial Lecture. Every year this memorial lecture is arranged on the same day of the felicitation function.
Dr Tarafder did his graduation in engineering from Bengal Engineering College, Calcutta University and earned his Ph.D. degree from the University of Cambridge, UK. He joined CSIR-NML in the year 1991 and served the organization in various capacities of senior scientist and advisory positions. He is the recipient of many prestigious awards for his contribution in metallurgical research and has more than 100 research publications in national and international journals to his credit.
Dr Tarafder delivered a lecture on ‘How Materials Fail?’ In his lecture Dr. Tarafder discussed mainly the failure mechanisms of engineering components. He discussed the importance of mechanical properties of material which impart resistance to failure of material components. According to him, corrosion, overload, creep and fatigue are the four major factors that lead to material failure under different circumstances. He elaborated on each of these four factors and explained the failure mechanisms.
His talk highlighted the process of evolution of damage in metallic materials and the manner in which such evolving damage can be quantified. Extensive research has been conducted at the CSIR-NML on this subject. He discussed the insights gained out of all these research on the behaviour of cracks under seismic loading, the process of damage accumulation at the tip of fatigue cracks which causes them to grow, microstructural damage that occurs during high speed deformation and during multi-axial fatigue, a non-destructive method of evaluation of creep damage, and exploring the imprint left on fracture surfaces that helps to assess the quality of the material that failed.
At the end of the talk, a brief question and answer session saw good response from the audience. The emcee Anushri Nag thanked Dr Tarafder for his talk and handed over a memento to him.
Dr Sandip Ghosh Choudhury, Vice Chairman of this chapter introduced the Guest of Honour of the evening Mr Sudhansu Pathak, Vice President, Steel Manufacturing, Tata Steel. He delivered a short speech and a memento was presented to him as a mark of gratitude for honouring the occasion with his presence.
More than 70 people attended the lecture. The programme was concluded with vote of thanks by Dr Chiradeep Ghosh, Secretary of IIM, Jamshedpur Chapter.
