In Gujarat Assembly, 83% members are crorepatis

Gujarat will be probably the first state in the country where over 80 per cent of the elected public representatives to the assembly are crorepatis.

A detailed analysis by election watchdog Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) said out of the 182 winning candidates analysed, 151 (83 per cent) were crorepatis. It is almost six per cent higher than the last election as 141 (77 per cent) MLAs elected during Gujarat assembly elections 2017 were crorepatis.

Of the crorepatis, 132 (85 per cent) out of 156 are from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) that retained power for 7th straight term. Fourteen (82 per cent) out of 17 MLAs elected from Congress, 1 (20 per cent) out of 5 from AAP, 1 (100 per cent) from SP, and 3 (100 per cent) Independent winning candidates have declared assets worth more than Rs 1 crore.

The average of assets per winning candidates in the Gujarat Assembly Elections 2022 is Rs 16.41 crore. The average of assets per MLA in the Gujarat Assembly Elections 2017 was Rs 8.46 crore.

The top three winning candidates with high assets include Jayantibhai Somabhai Patel, who won the election from Mansa. He has disclosed assets worth Rs 661 crore. Balvantsinh Chandansinh Rajput follows him with net assets of Rs 372 crore. Rajput has been elected from Sidhpur assembly constituency. Rameshbhai Virjibhai Tilala, who won from Rajkot South, has net assets of Rs 175 crore.

The ADR report said 86 (47 per cent) winning candidates have declared their educational qualification to be between 5th pass and 12th pass, while 83 (46 per cent) winning candidates have declared having an educational qualification of graduate and above. There are 7 winning candidates who have declared themselves as just literates and 6 winning candidates are diploma holders.

Of the elected MLAs, 62 (34 per cent) winning candidates have declared their age to be between 25 and 50 years while 120 (66 per cent) winning candidates have declared their age to be between 51 and 80 years.

Number of re-elected MLAs analysed in the Gujarat assembly elections of 2022 is 74.
