A 72-year-old man has been tested positive for Omicron variant of COVID-19 in Jamnagar city of Gujarat.
He had returned from Zimbabwe, the state health department said on Saturday. The sample of the elderly man was sent to Pune that confirmed he had been infected by the “virus of concern”, as identified by World Health. This is the third case of Omicron variant in the country.
The other two cases in India were reported from Bengaluru, Karnataka where a 46-year-old fully vaccinated doctor from Bengaluru, who had no travel history and developed symptoms of fever and body ache, and a 66-year-old South African national who came to India with a negative COVID-19 report.
The country has stepped up testing and surveillance of all incoming international passengers, especially from at-risk nations since the Omicron variant was first detected in South Africa.
The Gujarat health department officials said a micro-containment zone had been created where the Omicron-infected man had been residing while tracing and testing of people who came in his contact had started.
“We’ve isolated him and are monitoring him. A micro containment zone has been made where he is living. In the area, we will do the tracing, testing of people,” Manoj Aggarwal, Additional Chief Secretary, Health and Family Welfare Department, Gujarat, said.
Meanwhile, it is reported that 10 passengers who had returned from South Africa in Karnataka had been missing.
