Rourkela, September 19

The Shops Foundries Department of SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) has successfully completed the centrifugal casting of RDF Babbitt bearing bushes for Sintering Plant-3 of Bhilai Steel Plant.

This is a significant achievement as RSP has developed its own in-house facility for Babbitt centrifugal casting, showcasing the dedicated efforts of its Design and Shops teams.

The requirement from BSP, involved development of two Babbitt bearing bushes, needed true centrifugal casting. RSP, having streamlined the process with optimized feed rates and RPM over time, embraced the challenge. The Design team worked meticulously to create the necessary drawing, which was approved by BSP. Forged rounds were machined for casting, and essential preparations, including groove cutting and clamping arrangements, were executed to ensure precision.

On September 12, 2024, the second bearing was successfully cast. This capability, a first within SAIL, positions RSP as a leader in centrifugal casting and enables the development of various Babbitt bush bearings. The in-house endeavour significantly reduces costs and ensures faster availability of the bearings.
