Imphal, September 10
Amid fresh violence that erupted in Manipur on September 1, 2024, the state government on Tuesday suspended internet and mobile data services across the state.
The order, issued by Manipur Joint Secretary (Home) Mayengbam Veto Singh, would be effective for 5 days. It said there was apprehension of “anti-social elements” using social media platforms for subversive activities thus inciting the public and subsequently leading to deterioration of the law-and-order situation in the state.
“In view of the prevailing law and order situation in the State of Manipur, there is apprehension that some anti-social elements might use social media extensively for transmission of images, hate speech and hate video messages inciting the passions of the public which might have serious repercussions for the law-and-order situation in the State of Manipur,” the order said.
It added that such inflammatory materials may result in widespread disturbances to public tranquillity and communal harmony posing imminent danger to loss of life and property. The order added that to prevent any untoward incident, internet and mobile data services in the state have been suspended from 3 pm of September 10 to 3 pm of September 15.
Meanwhile, Manipur Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya on Tuesday appealed for peace in the state amid a sudden rise in violence, emphasizing that violence is not a solution to any problem.
In a statement, Governor Acharya stressed that peace and public cooperation are essential for societal development.
“Manipur, the ‘land of jewels,’ is not an exception. For a long time, this state has played a significant role in India’s all-around development. However, in recent months, the state has been in turmoil,” the Governor said.
