Providing first aid in an emergency could be a part of training for an Indian Police Service (IPS) official, but managing parturition of a cow could be bizarre dexterity!
The 2003-batch IPS official, Ratan Lal Dangi has made it possible. Now posted as Inspector General of Police in Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh, the IPS officer had to deal with the surreal situation on the night of Diwali when the domestic cow was in labour and needed immediate attention.
As the domestic helpers were relieved for the festival, the officer himself took the command and rushed to the cow shed in the attire he had put on to perform the laxmi puja. With his efforts, the cow safely delivered the calf. It was an emotional moment for him to see the cow sniffing and licking her newborn.
Dangi on Friday morning tweeted in Hindi, “welcome to small ‘laxmi’ in the family.” He added it was a difficult task to perform in absence of attendants but the experience always helped. “The farmer in me is still alive,” he added.
