The former Superintendent of Police, Gurbinder Singh was on Saturday suspended in connection with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s security lapse in the state in 2022.

He was posted at Bathinda. The SP has been accused of dereliction of duty.  The security breach happened on January 5, 2022, when Modi was on his way to Hussainiwala in Ferozepur and his cavalcade had to take a U-turn after protesters blocked his way.

The Prime Minister was stuck on a flyover for around 20 minutes. When the road did not open, Modi’s convoy had to return. The Prime Minister reached Bhisiana Airport in Bathinda. He told the officers present there to thank their Chief Minister stating “I have returned alive”.

Gurbinder Singh was then posted as Firozpur SP (Operation). After the incident, he was transferred to Bathinda.

In the report of the investigation committee constituted by the Supreme Court, the then Chief Secretary of Punjab, Anirudh Tiwari and DGP Siddharth Chattopadhyay have also been held guilty for neglecting the PM’s security in Ferozepur.

The committee had submitted this report to the Supreme Court and the government eight months ago in August 2022. Based on this report, the Center had written a letter to the Punjab government in September 2022 to take action against the guilty officials, but even after six months, no action has been taken in the matter.
