Raipur, February 12

A jawan of Indo Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) engaged in anti-Maoist operations committed suicide by shooting himself in Chhattisgarh’s restive Kondagaon district today morning

The jawan had been identified as Monu Yadav, a resident of Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh. He was posted with the 29th battalion of the ITBP that had been deployed in Kondagaon’s Urendabeda village for operations against the Left Wing Extremists.

The district police officials said that on Friday Monu along with other jawans left the camp for patrolling the area. When the troop reached the outskirts of the village, Monu shot himself with the service rifle. The jawans in the troop immediately rushed him to the nearest primary health centre where the doctors declared him dead.

The police officials quoting the preliminary investigation said that the jawan was under depression because of some family issues. However, an enquiry had been instituted to establish the exact cause that led the jawan to take the extreme step.

The police have registered an offence and are investigating the matter.
