Jharkhand court awards life term for forcible religious conversion of National shooter

In the first case of Love Jehad in Jharkhand in July, 2014, the special court of CBI on Thursday sentenced Ranjit Kohli alias Rakibul Hasan to life imprisonment (till death in custody).

Besides, his father Mushtak Ahmad, a former Registrar of Jharkhand High Court has been awarded 15 years of rigorous imprisonment and mother Kauser 10 years jail term.

The special CBI court judge, Prabhat Kumar Sharma also imposed fine of Rs 50,000 on the main accused and his father. CBI had presented 28 witnesses in the court. The probe was handed over to CBI following an order of High Court.

According to the prosecution, Tara had met Rakibul at a sports coaching centre where he had introduced himself as Ranjit Kohli. They have been found guilty of tricking the national shooting champion, Tara Shahdeo into marriage by providing her false information that they were Hindus.

She was forced to change her religion to Islam after one day of marriage on July 14, 2014 and changed her name to Sara Parwin. According to her complaint, Rakibul forced her into Nikah in presence of the then welfare minister, Haji Mohammad Ansari. When she resisted religious conversion, she was brutally assaulted. She left Rakibul a month after marriage.

She filed a petition before family court seeking judicial separation on grounds of cruelty which was allowed in 2018. Tara Sahdeo remarried to international shooter, Sanjiv Rajput who had won three gold medals and one silver medal in Commonwealth Games in 2010.
