Pramila Oraon is unparalleled. Her efforts in the field of education as a child makes her unmatched.
Studying in class 7 of Baba Kartik Oraon Night School (Ratri Pathshala) in Uchri village of Mandar development block in Ranchi, Pramila is also an example of collectivism in the tribal society. Apart from studying herself, Pramila is also teaching other small children in the school.
In a fluent and flawless message, Pramila says she is able to help her family and the people of the village through her education. Due to the education of the children, the parents of the rural areas could get their work done in the government offices and banks without any hurdles.
Pramila is one among the number of such talents that Baba Kartik Oraon Night School has been producing in the tribal belt of Jharkhand. The foundation of the school was laid in the year 2014 with the aim of making education a weapon of social change.
Dr Arun Oraon, the former IPS officer and chief patron of the Council started the school with creativity and vision. The mission is taking the form of a movement in the rural areas of Ranchi, Gumla and Lohardaga districts.
The school has been named after Baba Kartik Oraon, a political and Adivasi leader who founded “Akhil Bharatiya Adivasi Vikas Parishad”. After completing high schooling from Gumla in 1942, he passed Intermediate examination from Science College, Patna, and completed bachelor of engineering from Bihar College of Engineering, Patna.
Thereafter, he continued his further studies and acquired a number of qualifications from institutions of Great Britain. He is till now considered one of the most educated men of the Kurukh community and besides the foreign education he has a praise of his Oraon Sadri or Kurukh language.
Today, the number of the Ratri Pathshala has increased to 80 in Ranchi, Lohardaga and Gumla districts, in which 300 teachers are rendering their services to educate over 4000 children. The classes are conducted from 5 to 7 pm in the village community hall, Dhumkuria or at their own residence. Special attention is given to English, Science and Mathematics subjects.
The activities of the night school are reviewed by the council every three months while the teachers are trained with latest teaching technology that ease the classroom activities and make lessons more interesting. A few schools are equipped with computers to facilitate digital classes through projectors.
