Hong Kong pro-democracy media tycoon and The Apple Daily founder Jimmy Lai was transferred to the maximum security Stanley Prison in shackles on Thursday morning.
His supporters were not allowed to meet him as the authorities gave lame excuses.
Lai has been in custody since December 31 pending an appeal over his bail to be heard on February 1. He was transferred on Thursday after completing a 14-day quarantine period, the Apple Daily reported.
Lai was seen being escorted onto a prison van by three officers at the Lai Chi Kok detention center. He held a bag of personal belongings and looked in good spirits.
Former Democratic Party lawmaker Andrew Wan and Occupy Central co-founder Chan Kin-man arrived at the center at 9.40 am planning to visit Lai, but they were told by officers that it was not possible since Lai had to be transferred.
They wished to chat with Lai, but they could only visit him after he has settled in at Stanley Prison, they said.
